Let’s start with the basics

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal Fillers are frequently used to help restore volume and fullness in the face, as well as diminish lines or mild wrinkles. Due to the loss of subcutaneous fat in our face, the facial muscles are more evident on the skin’s surface, which is why as we age, smile lines and crow’s feet are more prominent. Other factors that can cause a loss of facial volume include facial skin stretching, heredity, lifestyle, and sun exposure. Dermal fillers can be incredibly useful for those with early signs of aging or even enhance other facial procedures.

The most common dermal filler uses Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a material naturally found in the skin.Although we produce plenty of it in our youth, the supply begins to diminish as we age, which is why wrinkles, sagging skin, and loss of volume are so much more prominent the older we get. As a natural humectant, HA can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, and the treatment also adds moisture and hydration to the skin when injected.

Dermal fillers are a great way to treat the following conditions:

  • A receding chin
  • Contour deformities in the face
  • Deep nose-to-mouth lines
  • Facial creases and wrinkles
  • Lines around the mouth
  • Minor nose deformities
  • Recessed scars
  • Shadows of the lower eyelids
  • Shallow contours
  • Thin or unevenly shaped lips
  • Thinning or sunken cheeks

What to expect on the day of surgery

When it’s time for your Dermal Fillers, no matter which kind you are using, Dr. Samson will begin by marking strategic spots in your treatment area. While there may be minute changes as the filler is injected, these markings allow Dr. Samson to use his artistic eye to make sure you have natural-looking results.

Next, the injection sites will be cleansed using an antibacterial agent to prevent any unnecessary infection. Before the injections begin, Dr. Samson may use a cold instrument or anesthetic ointment to numb your skin and make your experience more pleasant. Although you will still feel the insertion of the needle, it should be more easily tolerated.

Each injection will only take a few minutes. Dr. Samson will inject a small portion of the filler, gently massage it, evaluate the results, and only add a little more if needed. After he is finished, any markings that were made will be removed. You will be offered an ice pack to help reduce any swelling and alleviate discomfort.

Your dermal filler treatment will normally last only 15 minutes, however, it can take as long as an hour based on the size and if there are multiple locations.

What’s the First Step?

The first step in getting Dermal Fillers in New York City is to contact the office of William Samson, MD, and schedule a consultation. During this appointment, you will meet with Dr. Samson and express what you’d like to achieve out of your treatment. You will also need to discuss your medical history and receive an evaluation of the area being treated. After collecting all of this information, a treatment plan will be created for you. If you agree with this plan, you will be able to receive your dermal filler right then, or if you need to, you can reschedule for a better day and time with the Patient Coordinator.

Dermal Fillers Recovery

You will be able to return to your daily routine after you are finished with your filler injections, but every patient will have a different recovery time. We do recommend that you avoid any intense physical activity for the first 24 – 48 hours to avoid filler migration and minimize swelling and bruising.

When you leave the office, you may have an “overfilled” appearance in the treated areas, some swelling or bruising that can range from mild to severe, palpable lumps, or a hypersensitive reaction. These reactions can be alleviated with topical icing and a gentle massage and should heal within a few hours up to a few days.

How Much Does Dermal Fillers Cost in New York City?

The cost of Dermal Fillers in New York City is based on a multitude of factors, including which type of filler you’re getting and how much is being injected. After meeting with Dr. Samson during your consultation and he creates your treatment plan, our Patient Coordinator will be able to use that information to provide you with a breakdown of the total price of your treatment.

Dermal Fillers FAQs

Are Dermal Fillers painful?

Dermal Fillers are typically considered to be non-painful by many of our patients, however, they have expressed feeling some discomfort when the needle is inserted.

How many appointments will I need?

Dermal Fillers are not permanent, so if you like the results from your treatment, you will need touch-ups every 4 - 6 months.

How long until I see results?

You should be able to see visible results within hours after leaving your appointment, if not immediately. It does take about 4 weeks for the filler to fully integrate into the tissue, with some fillers being more cohesive than others.

Can I combine Dermal Fillers with other procedures?

Absolutely! You can combine Dermal Fillers with injectables like BOTOX for a fuller-looking face. If you’re looking for a certain aesthetic, please discuss this with Dr. Samson and he will be able to make some perfect suggestions.

What are the risks associated with Dermal Fillers?

Receiving Dermal Fillers is typically a very safe procedure, especially when performed by a trained and skilled injector. The treatment does have specific risks and side effects that are associated with it, which include:
  • Acne-like skin eruptions
  • Asymmetry
  • Bleeding from the injection site
  • Bruising
  • Damage to the skin that results in a wound and possible scarring
  • Infection at the injection site
  • Lumps
  • Palpability of the filler under the surface of the skin
  • Skin necrosis (ulceration or loss of skin from disruption of blood flow)
  • Skin rash with itching
  • Skin redness
  • Swelling
  • Under- or over-correction of wrinkles
In extremely rare cases, the filler can accidentally get injected into your blood vessels instead of under your skin, which will block blood flow. Based on where the block is, you will have varying results. For example, if your skin is affected, it can create skin loss or wounds, but if your eye is affected, it could lead to the loss of eyesight or make you go blind.
