Introduction to Tummy Tuck

Innovative Body Contouring

If you’ve ever turned the TV on during the day or even sometimes late at night, chances are that you’ve come across an infomercial or two that are pitching you a new way to achieve a flatter stomach. A well-toned abdomen is a desire that many people share but it’s not always achievable through diet and sit-ups. While every little bit helps, some things like age, genetics, or recent pregnancy can lead to lax skin which makes it difficult to achieve the ideal stomach.

At William Samson, MD in New York City, we strive to deliver the best Tummy Tuck results for our patients who need a little extra help! This procedure is different than Liposuction and can make a difference in improving self-image. If you are interested in a Tummy Tuck in NYC, please keep reading below for more information.

Let’s start with the basics

What is a Tummy Tuck?

The Tummy Tuck, also called Abdominoplasty, removes the extra skin and fat around your stomach, and in some cases, can even be used to restore weakened or separated muscles, giving you a smoother and finer abdominal profile. While a tummy tuck cannot correct stretch marks, it can help improve or remove them depending on their location.

What to expect on the day of surgery

When you come in for your Tummy Tuck, it will begin with you being administered some anesthesia in the form of general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, depending on what is discussed during your consultation. When you are fully sedated, Dr. Samson will begin making his strategic incisions.

A full tummy tuck utilizes a horizontally-oriented incision placed between the pubic hairline and the belly button. The shape and length of the incisions are determined by the amount of excess skin. After your abdominal skin is lifted, the weaker, underlying abdominal muscles are repaired. If necessary, Dr. Samson will make a second incision around your naval to remove the excess skin in your upper abdomen. The upper abdominal skin is pulled down and any excess skin is trimmed. The remaining skin is sutured together and a new opening for the belly button is created. Dr. Samson will pop the belly button up through the surface and suture it into position. Finally, the incision is closed with sutures, skin adhesives, tapes, or clips.

*This procedure will take approximately 2 – 3 hours.

What’s the First Step?

The first step in getting a Tummy Tuck in New York City is to contact the office of William Samson, MD. When you come in for your consultation, you will be able to meet with Dr. Samson and discuss what you’re looking to achieve from the procedure. He will also be able to answer any questions that you may have, give you an examination of your stomach and body type, and ask you questions about your medical history. You should be very open and honest when talking about your medical history as this will help Dr. Samson make the best decisions when creating your surgical and treatment plan.

Once your plan has been made and you agree with it, then you will meet with our Patient Coordinator who will help you select your surgical date. You will also be given a list of instructions that will help give you a more optimal surgical experience

Who are the Best Candidates for a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is also an option for men or women who were once obese and still have excess fat deposits or loose skin around the belly.

*Please keep in mind that a Tummy Tuck is not a substitute for weight loss or a healthy lifestyle. While the results of this procedure can be long-lasting, they are not permanent if you experience significant fluctuations in weight. If you are a woman who plans on getting pregnant again, we highly suggest that you wait until you are finished having children as you may lose the results of your procedure. This also goes for anyone considering substantial weight loss.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

After your surgery, you will be able to return home to recover in peace, however, you should have a friend or family member available to give you a ride home. You will have dressings or bandages applied to your incisions and you may also be wrapped in an elastic bandage or compression garment to minimize swelling and give your abdomen additional support. Dr. Samson may temporarily insert some small tubes called cannulas under your skin to help drain any blood or fluid that collects.

You will likely be sore during the first week or so and should plan on resting and taking some downtime the first few days post-surgery, this is to reduce scarring and avoid any excess bruising or swelling. You may be able to return to work after a few days but only if you have light work, there should be absolutely no heavy lifting until Dr. Samson clears you to do so. Most patients require at least 2 – 3 weeks before they can do even gentle tasks.

How Much Does Tummy Tuck Cost in New York City?

The cost of a Tummy Tuck in NYC is dependent on a number of factors, including the amount of fat and tissue that is required to be removed and the anesthetic choice for your surgery. After meeting with Dr. Samson and discussing everything, our Patient Coordinator will be able to give you a breakdown of the full price of your treatment.

Tummy Tuck FAQs

Is a Tummy Tuck painful?

You should be perfectly comfortable during your procedure thanks to the anesthesia, however, you can expect some discomfort during your recovery, with a majority of the pain taking place in the first week. Dr. Samson will provide you with some temporarily prescribed medications to help you have a successful and comfortable recovery.

How many appointments will I need?

No matter what procedure you are getting, Dr. Samson will always want to see you about a week following your surgery. With a Tummy Tuck, you will need to come back for that first check-up, but you can expect to come back around 2 weeks later, and then again after 6 weeks. You will always be given the desired return date for your check-ups as well as when it will be your last one before you leave.

How long until I see results?

Depending on the changes being made, you should see some instant changes following your surgery. There will be some swelling and bruising as you recover, so many patients can see their final results around 2 - 3 months depending on their skin laxity and overall general health.

Can I combine Tummy Tuck with other procedures?

Many of our New York City Tummy Tuck patients combine their surgery with other body contour procedures such as a Breast Lift, Breast Augmentation, Liposuction, or Arm Lift. If you have a specific area that you would like Dr. Samson to look at, please bring this up during your consultation and he will be able to make the best procedure recommendations to you.
