Eyelid Surgery New York City
Introduction to Eyelid Surgery
Creating Facial Balance & Harmony
Eyes are the windows to the soul. They express every ounce of our emotions and—in many cases—display how we are feeling to onlookers. We all know how it feels to have tired eyes or when a colleague states, “you look tired today.” Due to aging and genetics, some people have this feeling and appearance daily. That’s why Eyelid Surgery is such a popular treatment. The procedure performed by Dr. William Samson improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or in some cases, both. Fat, excess skin, bags, pouches, and wrinkles in the eyelid area can be removed to make the eyes and eyelids look more youthful and vibrant. It offers a rejuvenated appearance to the area surrounding your eyes, making you look more rested and alert.
Dr. William Samson is widely known for eyelid surgery in New York City. This page is dedicated to answering some of the most common questions about the popular procedure. If you would like to schedule a consultation, please contact us today!
Let’s start with the basics
What is Eyelid Surgery?
According to the most recent statistics published by the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), eyelid surgery is among the top three most common plastic surgery procedures performed in the US. It can lead to phenomenal results for our patients, genuinely changing their lives. Blepharoplasty at William Samson MD aims to correct all drooping or puffy elements of your eyes with precision and care. Eyelid surgery procedure is often separated into either Upper Blepharoplasty or Lower Blepharoplasty. During surgery, Dr. William Samson will cut into the creases of the eyelids to trim sagging skin and muscle and remove excess fat. He then rejoins the skin with tiny dissolving stitches, leading to the eyes you’ve always dreamed of having.
Upper Eyelid Surgery NYC
During Upper Eyelid surgery, the two main techniques are incisional and non-incisional. A non-incisional is a less invasive procedure that is normally performed on younger individuals who don’t have a lot of excess skin and fat. Dr. Samson will begin by carefully measuring and marking your eyelid where a series of tiny punctures will be made into the skin along the line. Sutures will then be placed through the punctures and tightened until they perform a good crease.
The incisional technique is typically done on older patients who have excess skin from loss of collagen and elastin. Dr. Samson will remove any excess skin, muscle, and fat necessary, then the incisions will be closed with tiny sutures that will either dissolve or be removed during your follow-up appointment.
Lower Eyelid Surgery NYC
If you are getting a Lower Blepharoplasty, there are also different approaches that Dr. Samson can use to meet your goals, however, they are primarily incisional techniques. He will remove the excess fat that is herniated, which is when the tissue structures and muscles supporting your eyelids weaken, or what many people refer to as “bags under the eyes”. This can be done with an incision on the outside to remove skin or inside the eyelid, depending on your particular anatomy.
Main Advantages
What are the Benefits of Eyelid Surgery?
When it comes to all Plastic Surgery, appearance is often the higher priority. Eyelid Surgery can help you look younger, happier, and more rested while also giving you more confidence. We enjoy explaining the benefits you stand to gain from Blepharoplasty, as the procedure reaches far beyond just positive aesthetics – and indeed can change a patient’s life in many ways. Benefits include:
- Expanded line of sight for improved vision
- Enhanced eye shape for a refreshed appearance
- Reduced skin irritation from excess folds rubbing together
- A more youthful and rested appearance
- Removal of dark under-eye circles
What to expect on the day of surgery
We start the day by ensuring our patients are as comfortable as possible. The procedure is usually performed in our office or a surgery center with local anesthesia and lasts forty-five minutes to a few hours, depending on the extent of the operation. Dr. Samson removes excess tissue through these incisions (in the creases of the upper lids and just below the lashes on the lower lids) and then stitches them closed with tiny sutures.
If no skin needs to be removed, Dr. William Samson will likely perform a Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty, where the incision is made inside the lower eyelid, and there are no visible scars. Please make sure you make arrangements with a friend or family member to accompany you on the day of your Blepharoplasty; this helps with your transportation to and from our New York City location.

Who are the Best Candidates for Eyelid Surgery?
To understand if you are the right kind of candidate for Blepharoplasty with Dr. William Samson, you must ask yourself; are you tired of puffy, baggy eyes? This procedure may be perfect for you if the answer is yes. The average age of patients seeking lower eyelid surgery is mid-thirties; for upper Eyelid Surgery, patients are typically forty or older. Younger patients seek under-eye surgery to get rid of lower eyelid “bags” and “dark circles,” which are hereditary traits. If you’re bothered by droopy, baggy eyelids, however, Eyelid Surgery may be appropriate at any age, depending on the circumstances. Each candidate is different, and Dr. William Samson aims to develop a successful plan for every kind of individual. If you find yourself dealing with any of the issues below you may be the perfect candidate:
- Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids
- Loose or sagging skin of the upper eyelid can even impair vision
- Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid
- Bags under the eyes
- Droopiness of the lower eyelids, showing white below the iris
Eyelid Surgery Recovery
Relaxation is highly advised when healing from this procedure. Stitches are removed after three or four days, and most people return to work in ten. You should be prepared to take time off to let your eyelids heal correctly; we can’t recommend it enough. Contact lenses may not be worn for two weeks after Blepharoplasty. Post-surgery, it is common for your eyelids to be puffy, as your incisions will emerge red, and the swelling and bruising may resemble that of a black eye; this is entirely normal. William Samson, MD, and our highly skilled team are here to answer any questions about the healing process. Once healed, the fantastic effects of Blepharoplasty can last for a long time and are sometimes even permanent.
